Local Food Purchase Assistance
Local Food Purchase Assistance
What is LFPA?
The Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA) uses non-competitive cooperative agreements with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide funding for state, tribal and territorial governments to purchase foods produced within the state or within 400 miles of the delivery destination to help support local, and regional producers. The purpose of this program is to maintain and improve food and agricultural supply chain resiliency. This cooperative agreement:
- Allows Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to procure and distribute local and regional foods and beverages that are healthy, nutritious, unique to our geographic areas
- Increases local food consumption
- Helps build and expand economic opportunity for local producers
MDE partners with seven food distribution partner organizations, which purchase the food directly from local farmers and distributed the food to communities in all 83 counties statewide. Food is distributed through mobile markets, Healthy Harvest Kits, drive-thru operations, walk-up farmers markets, food banks and food pantries, and on public transportation, to name just a few.
