Janis Sanders, age 24, had recently ended her relationship with Jerry Libertowski, age 33, of South Bend, Indiana. After moving out of Libertowski's residence, she returned to live with her parents in Niles, Michigan. Sanders had recently begun working as a waitress at Pete's Patio Restaurant.
On the evening of July 20, 1975, Libertowski arrived at the restaurant while Sanders was working. She was last seen speaking with him in the parking lot shortly after midnight when her shift ended. Her vehicle was later found abandoned at a local motel. Sanders left behind two young children.
Investigators also noted that Libertowski's previous girlfriend, Janeice Langs, age 23, disappeared in 1973. Neither Sanders nor Langs has ever been located.
