Fallen Trooper Memorial
December 23, 1978 - September 15, 2024
MC Ofcr. Daniel Kerstetter passed away after being struck by a vehicle while on a traffic stop.
On Friday, September 13, 2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m., MC Officer Kerstetter was conducting a traffic stop on the side of Northbound I-75 near Dix Highway in Lincoln Park when his patrol vehicle was struck by another motorist. MC Officer Kerstetter was seated in his vehicle with his seat belt on at the time of the crash. Witness statements indicated that a Ford Explorer struck the median wall before continuing down the freeway and striking MC Officer Kerstetter’s patrol vehicle and pushing it into the back of the semi-truck.
MC Officer Kerstetter was extracted from the vehicle and transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital in critical condition. On Sunday, September 15, 2024, MC Officer Kerstetter was removed from life support and passed away as a result of his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also killed.
MC Officer Kerstetter began his career with the Michigan State Police in 2023, graduating as a member of the 26th Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School. He served at the Metro North Post.
MC Officer Kerstetter is the 57th MSP officer to die in the line of duty.
