Fallen Trooper Memorial
July 22, 1984 - January 24, 2024
Tpr. Joel E. Popp passed away after being struck by a vehicle while on a traffic stop.
On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 7:12 p.m., Trooper Popp and other troopers were investigating a suspected impaired driver stopped in a curved lane on I-75 in Saginaw County near Birch Run. Another motorist, an 81-year-old male, lost control and struck two patrol vehicles and Trooper Popp who was outside of his patrol vehicle.
Trooper Popp was transported to Hurley Medical Center where he passed away as a result of his injuries.
Trooper Popp began his career with the Michigan State Police in 2020, graduating as a member of the 137th Trooper Recruit School. He served his entire career at the Tri-City Post.
Trooper Popp is the 56th MSP officer to die in the line of duty.
