2026 April Severe Storms, Tornadoes, and Flooding
2026 April Severe Storms, Tornadoes, and Flooding
On April 14, 2026, Governor Gretchen Whitmer expanded the activation of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) beyond the ongoing response at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex to coordinate and monitor weather-related emergencies across Michigan.
Following historic March snowfall in Northern Michigan and multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall between April 13 and April 18, communities across the state experienced tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail and significant river flooding.
The severe weather displaced or stranded hundreds of residents, flooded or washed out numerous roadways and prompted heightened monitoring of several dams due to concerns about overtopping and potential failure.
Throughout April, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued 13 flash flood warnings, 24 flood warnings and 25 flood advisories across Michigan.
The SEOC remained activated to support response and recovery operations related to both the statewide flooding and the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex before being deactivated on May 8, 2026.
