More than 650 Michigan's AmeriCorps members kicked off a new year of AmeriCorps service recently at the 2017 Member Celebration, hosted by the Michigan Community Service Commission.
The AmeriCorps members are pledging a year of their lives to providing intensive, results-driven service in communities across Michigan and came together to celebrate their courage and commitment.
“AmeriCorps members are special people. They have dedicated a year of their lives to serve in communities and make an impact in our state,” said Ginna Holmes, executive director of the Michigan Community Service Commission. “We love engaging with them and giving them the tools to help solve our state’s most critical issues.”
AmeriCorps is a nation-wide, competitive grant program through which organizations can apply to host teams of individuals, called members, to provide service in nonprofits, public agencies, faith-based, and other community organizations. In the 2017-18 program year, nearly 1,000 AmeriCorps members in Michigan will serve in a variety of capacities, including providing financial literacy training, helping homeless individuals and families find permanent housing, organizing literacy and tutoring programs for underperforming youth, mentoring and supporting youth from disadvantaged circumstances, preserving our environment, building houses, feeding the hungry, recruiting volunteers, and more.
2017-18 state AmeriCorps programs
In return for providing a year service, members receive a modest living stipend and an education award to be used towards college, vocational training programs, or student loans. The Michigan Community Service Commission is the administering organization for Michigan's AmeriCorps programs, which it does with funds provided by the Corporation from National and Community Service (CNCS).
The Member Celebration helps members gain a new perspective on the impact their AmeriCorps service has throughout the state. During the event, members participated in valuable training, networking and teambuilding opportunities. They also enhanced their professional development through workshops on leadership, volunteer recruitment, conflict resolution and other topics relevant to national and community service. Additionally, members heard from leadership expert and former first gentleman, Dan Mulhern. The Member Celebration concluded with remarks from Anika Goss-Foster, Executive Director of Detroit Future City Implementation Office, and a swearing-in ceremony that helped reaffirm members' commitment to AmeriCorps and national service.
