Accommodation services
The licensed occupational therapy professionals in Accommodation Services are available to assess and make recommendations for accommodations related to the educational process, independent living skills and the specific job requirements of each trade. Students can self-refer or be referred to the OT staff by their home counselor, case manager or trade instructor.
Here are some examples of accommodations that have been recommended by the OT staff and implemented to ensure the student’s success at MCTI and later in their chosen career:
Example 1
Problem Solution A student is interested in pharmacy technician training. He has one arm and one leg. He is challenged to complete some tasks with one hand that typically require two, and to do them in a sterile fashion. He has a prosthetic leg and has some standing limitations. He used Dycem on a work surface to stabilize medication bottles enabling him to open and close them independently. He used a left-handed counting tray and a sit-stand stool allowing him to work at standing height while reducing the significant amount of weight his leg supports. A left-handed metal pill-counting tray with green pill caplets ready to be sorted.Example 2
Problem Solution A student in the automotive technician trade has a writing challenge where he and others are not able to read his handwriting. Completing the automotive technician work sheet was not effective because it was illegible. The automotive technician work sheet was made into a fillable form where he can type the required information so that it is legible. This can be accessed at a stationary computer or on a tablet at the training bay. Problem Solution A culinary arts student struggles to initiate his assigned task, remain focused and complete the task within a preestablished time. He asks questions he knows the answers to, ultimately slowing his productivity speed. He started using a “Time Timer”, a visual timer that helps individuals “see” time, giving him the feedback needed to maintain focus, self-regulate, and improve productivity. This student was able to increase his productivity speed by 80%. It is the policy of Michigan Career and Technical Institute (MCTI) to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination based on sex (including sexual harassment and sexual violence) in all MCTI’s educational programs and activities on or off the campus located in Plainwell, Michigan. How to appeal decisions made by MCTI
Appeal rights
An appeal is a request to reconsider any decision made related to a student’s rehabilitation program. Students have the right to appeal a decision made to suspend, terminate, or be placed on probation for their actions in the dorm, on the MCTI campus, or on a school-sponsored outing. In certain situations, students may be asked to remain off campus pending the administrative review and the decision. These would include health and safety issues and campus security issues.
Appeal process
If a student disagrees with the Michigan Career & Technical Institute (MCTI) about a decision related to their rehabilitation program, they can appeal that decision. The following outlines the appeal process:
Talking it over informally
First, the student should attempt to resolve the problem by talking it over with the MCTI staff person who made the decision they disagree with. An open discussion of the disagreement may help to clarify the situation and make the need for a formal review unnecessary.
MCTI administrative review
If the student still disagrees with the decision and talking it over informally did not resolve the issue, the student has the right to request an administrative review. In most situations, the student may be asked to remain off campus pending the administrative review and the decision. These situations include but are not limited to concerns with health and safety and campus security.
To request an administrative review, the student must write to the school director, Scott Cubberly, within five business days of being informed of the decision. In the letter, the student must state the specific issues they are appealing and ask for an administrative review. The request should be submitted to the director’s executive 56 | Page secretary, Jen Woodstock. Requests may be sent via fax to 269-664-5850 or emailed to WoodstockJ@michigan.gov or mailed to 11611 West Pine Lake Rd. Plainwell, MI 49080.
The review process
The review will be conducted by a randomly assigned MCTI supervisor. It will be held over the phone at a time convenient to everyone involved in the review. The student will be able to present written information and have other individuals testify at the review to support their position. The student may also question the written information and witnesses that MCTI presents to support the decision made by the school.
The review officer will send the student a written decision within 10 days of the date of the administrative review. All decisions will be reviewed by the school director. The decision will become effective on the date it is mailed.
If the student still disagrees with the decision of the school, they may request a formal hearing. To request a hearing, the student must write to the Director of MRS, Sigrid Adams, within 30 days of the date the decision was made. In the letter the student must indicate that they are an MCTI student, state which decision they disagree with and ask for a formal hearing.
