State Board of Education Meeting Scheduled for Thursday October 22
October 16, 2020
LANSING – The State Board of Education will conduct its October monthly meeting online at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2020 as a result of Governor Gretchen Whitmer signing into law Senate Bill 1108 that permits public bodies to conduct meetings virtually.
The regularly scheduled October 13 meeting of the State Board of Education was postponed due to a lack of clarity about the conditions under which public bodies could hold public meetings, including virtual meetings.
A Michigan Supreme Court decision on October 2, 2020 determined that Governor Whitmer did not have the authority to continue declaring states of emergency and nullified her executive orders therewith, including an order allowing public bodies to meet virtually.
The state legislature subsequently passed Senate Bill 1108 to allow the continuation of virtual meetings of public bodies through the end of 2020, which Governor Whitmer signed into law this afternoon.
