MDE Announces Rebranding of Program That Connects Students, Schools with Farms
LANSING – A program that connects Michigan farms with children in schools and early education programs is being renamed to better reflect its purpose.
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced today that Farm Grown for Michigan’s Kids is the new name of the program that had been known as 10 Cents a Meal. The name underscores the long-term value of the statewide program, which has benefited both children and farms since 2016.
“As we celebrate a decade of positive impact, it makes sense to rename a program that has provided our children with locally grown, nutritious food,” said State Superintendent, Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “Farm Grown for Michigan Kids puts Students First by giving schools the resources they need to get more Michigan products on our students’ plates. It also goes a long way toward supporting local growers and producers who depend on new and continuing streams of business to keep their operations going.”
The program will continue to provide resources and support to schools to strengthen the local food supply chain and enrich nutrition and educational experiences for Michigan children. As annual funding allows, grant funds will be made available to help pay for Michigan-grown food, local food transportation fees, and food service labor expenses for eligible schools participating in child nutrition programs in Michigan.
The new brand, Farm Grown for Michigan Kids, reflects the program’s evolution over the years and more clearly signals its purpose: strengthening connections between local food, Michigan farms and children’s nutrition. This refreshed identity is designed to elevate the program’s visibility and reinforce its role in Michigan’s broader Farm to Program efforts. MDE will gradually phase out the old name over the next year. In the meantime, both names may be used for clarity.
Farm Grown for Michigan Kids’ grant model, matching structure and participation requirements will remain the same with available funding. Any questions can be directed to the Farm to Program team at MDE-FarmToProgram@Michigan.gov.
