October 25, 2021
LANSING - The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce the release of the latest #proudMIeducator video, featuring 2020-21 Michigan Teacher of the Year Owen Bondono.
The video can be viewed at: #proudMIeducator: Owen Bondono, 2020-21 Michigan Teacher of the Year - YouTube
"The #proudMIeducator campaign is one way we honor the hard work of dedicated educators like Mr. Bondono," said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. "We hope that his experiences and reflections will help others understand the importance of diverse voices in our classrooms and schools, and motivate people to consider a career in education."
Bondono is Michigan's first openly transgender Teacher of the Year and has been open about the hurdles he faced in his journey to become a teacher. Through his story, he hopes to inspire others to join the teaching profession and create classrooms that are welcoming and accepting of all students.
Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator series has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found on the MDE YouTube Page, www.YouTube.com/MichDeptEd.
If you know a proud Michigan educator who should be considered for a future video feature, please email MDE-PME@Michigan.gov.
