Library of Michigan Announces 2022 Michigan Author Award Winner

LANSING – The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce Michael Zadoorian as the recipient of the 2022 Michigan Author Award*.
Michael Zadoorian is the critically acclaimed author of four novels, including the international bestseller, The Leisure Seeker, which was made into a Sony Pictures Classics film starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland. His other books are Second Hand, Beautiful Music, and The Narcissism of Small Differences as well as a story collection, The Lost Tiki Palaces of Detroit.
He is a recipient of a Kresge Artist Fellowship in the Literary Arts, the Columbia University Anahid Literary award, the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers award, and the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association (GLIBA) Great Lakes Great Reads award.
Zadoorian’s The Lost Tiki Palaces of Detroit and Beautiful Music were both honored as Michigan Notable Books by the Library of Michigan. His work has appeared in The Literary Review, Beloit Fiction Journal, American Short Fiction, Witness, Great Lakes Review, North American Review, Literary Hub, The Millions, and Huffington Post, and has been translated into over twenty languages worldwide.
Zadoorian is a lifelong resident of the Detroit area, initially growing up in northwest Detroit. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications and master’s degree in English, creative writing from Wayne State University. He lives with his wife, Rita Simmons in Ferndale, Michigan.
The Michigan Author Award was established in 1992 with the intention of recognizing significant Michigan authors with a lifetime achievement award. Previously developed by the Michigan Library Association, the award is now facilitated by the Library of Michigan and Michigan Center for the Book.
This year’s Michigan Author Award selection committee includes representatives from the Library of Michigan; Detroit Public Library; Clinton-Macomb District Library; Capital Area District Libraries; University of Michigan Library; Lansing City Pulse newspaper; Michigan Department of Education; Michigan Center for the Book; and Michigan Humanities.
