Saline Paraeducator Highlighted in Latest #proudMIeducator Video
May 18, 2023
LANSING – Paraeducator Heather Dew uses American Sign Language (ASL) to teach and connect with students at Saline High School and is the 2022 Michigan Education Support Staff Person of the Year and highlighted in the latest #proudMIeducator video.
“It is important for us to continue highlighting the voices of educators and support staff, like Heather, who have an important role in educating Michigan’s children and being inspired to become teachers,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. “The #proudMIeducator campaign is one way we honor the hard work of passionate educators, such as Heather, and we hope that others will consider a career in education after hearing her story.”
Increasing the number of certified teachers, especially in areas of shortage, is one of the eight goals of Michigan’s strategic education plan.
As the Education Support Staff Person of the Year, Ms. Dew says: “I want my platform to be that every student can—every student can learn, can grow, can communicate.”
Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator series has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found on the MDE YouTube page.
