Two Michigan Schools Named U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools

Livonia Hayes Elementary and West Side Christian School in Grand Rapids honored for environmental efforts

LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is congratulating two Michigan schools announced as winners of 2024 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools awards.

The schools are Hayes Elementary School in Livonia Public Schools and West Side Christian School in Grand Rapids. The award honors schools, districts, and postsecondary institutions for reducing environmental impact and costs, improving health and wellness, and offering effective sustainability education.

“It’s critical for Michigan children to learn about our environment and the importance of taking care of the environment,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “I applaud students and educators at Hayes Elementary and West Side Christian for their innovative efforts to apply classroom learning to the real world.”

MDE nominated the two Michigan schools with support from the Michigan Departments of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and Health and Human Services (MDHHS).

Across the country, 41 schools, 10 districts, three postsecondary institutions, and one early learning center are being honored for their innovative efforts and to serve as an example for other schools.

The honorees were named from a pool of candidates nominated by 24 states.

This announcement comes as the White House last week hosted the first Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K-12 School Buildings and Grounds, highlighting the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to equitable access to energy efficient, climate resilient, and healthy school facilities that are conducive to learning and well-being.

A U.S. Education Department report illustrates accomplishments of the 56 honorees, including West Side Christian and Hayes Elementary.
