Lee Middle and High School Library in West Michigan Earns Award
September 16, 2024
LANSING – The Lee Middle and High School Library, part of Godfrey-Lee Public Schools in Wyoming in Kent County, has earned the state’s 21st Century Model School Library award for the 2024-2025 school year, the Library of Michigan announced today.
The Lee Middle and High School Library, with district library media specialist Mr. Harry Coffill, is a new space for the Lee Middle and High School. Coffill’s work with administrative and teaching colleagues to create the newly constructed library, new learning opportunities for Godfrey-Lee students, and improved elementary library spaces has had an outsized impact on the school community.
Coffill’s partnership work with the Kent District Library provides additional materials, programming, and support for students in his community. His collaborations with fellow teaching staff give students access to independent reading resources and high-quality support.
“Support for reading is foundational to educational achievement for students of all ages,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “It contributes to meeting Goal 2 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, to improve early literacy achievement.”
State Librarian Mr. Randy Riley said the effort required to develop these successful partnerships and collaborations for Godfrey-Lee students demonstrates Coffill’s and Principal Mr. Andy Steketee’s determination to provide a high-quality educational environment for students.
The 21st Century Model School Library program recognizes high-quality school libraries and library media specialists and promotes developing similar initiatives in other schools. The program is based on the Library of Michigan’s School Library 21st Century benchmarks. The Lee Middle and High School Library holds exemplary status in the program through May 2027.
Lee Middle and High School Library staff are available to consult with school district leaders, school librarians, and educators who want to develop or expand their vision for their school library programs. Interested persons may contact Coffill at hcoffill@godfrey-lee.org or Ms. Karren Reish at the Library of Michigan at reishk@michigan.gov.
