Montrose CTE Teacher Gives Students Chance to Explore Working Behind, In Front of Camera

Latest Proud Michigan Educator Video Features Instructor Who Started Broadcasting Program from Ground Up

LANSING – Jamie Kitts uses a student-centered approach to give young people at Montrose Community Schools in Genesee County the opportunity for hands-on learning about broadcasting.

“Mr. Kitts is not standing up here and directing and telling the kids what to do,” said Montrose Superintendent Dr. Linden “Bo” Moore. “He arranges for their learning.”

The latest Michigan Department of Education #proudMIeducator video features Kitts, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) educator who has taught at Montrose for over 15 years. The video can be viewed at  #proudMIeducator: Jamie Kitts, Digital Media Instructor, Montrose Community Schools.

“Mr. Kitts knows what it means to put Students First,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “We need teachers like him to continue to increase participation in CTE programs that engage Michigan students in learning by giving them an opportunity to pursue their interests and prepare for postsecondary education and careers.”

Kitts started the Montrose broadcasting program. Students can explore an interest in working in front of or behind the camera, reporting on school activities such as sporting events and band competitions.

"This program is important to the students because it gives them something to be proud of,” Kitts said. “These kids can say, if they weren’t the captain of the basketball team or the softball team, ‘I did instant replay and I was good at that. I did on-field reporting. I was good at that.’”

CTE certification that students can earn through the broadcasting program can help them get jobs, Kitts said. “They can take that through the CTE portion of the program, and they can take that certification out and say, ‘I am qualified to do this.’ And that's what’s great about CTE.”

Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education.
