Michigan Department of Education Asks Students, Others to Submit Videos Recognizing Teachers During Teacher Appreciation Month

LANSING – Michigan K-12 students and other community members are encouraged to participate in a month-long video effort designed to recognize the important work that teachers perform.

It comes as the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and State Board of Education gear up to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Month in May and Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8.

MDE invites students and community members to help highlight the state's incredible teachers and show their gratitude to those teachers who have positively impacted them. Participants can submit a digital video to recognize and thank a specific teacher for their impact. Videos are being accepted through April 15.

Selected videos will be featured on MDE's YouTube channel and the Teacher Appreciation webpage

“We thank teachers for the tireless effort that they give to our children every day,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “Educators are heroes who put Students First. We know there are many students and other community members who would like to share appreciation for individual teachers.”

Recognizing Michigan’s educators is an important strategy for recruiting and retaining quality educators in support of Goal 7 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, which is increasing the number of certified teachers in areas of shortage.

“Teachers are the backbone of public schools and help to shape student achievement and performance,” said State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh. “The State Board of Education and I appreciate the powerful work of Michigan teachers around the state.”

In addition, MDE invites Michigan’s intermediate school districts and local education agencies, both traditional public-school districts and public-school academies, to include special “shout-outs” to their teachers during May on their approved social media platforms. Shout-outs will be re-posted to the Office of Educator Excellence’s Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) social media pages using the hashtags #MITeachAppreesh and #PME (Proud Michigan Educator).
