Family-to-Family Support
Welcome to a new community! As you begin to learn about your child’s hearing difference, you may be feeling a wide range of emotions and have many questions—that's completely normal. Whatever you're feeling right now, know that you're not alone. Many families have walked this path, and connecting with others who’ve had similar experiences can be incredibly helpful and reassuring. This community is here to walk alongside you with understanding, support, and shared experiences.
Michigan Hands & Voices
Michigan Hands & Voices is a statewide organization by parents, for parents, dedicated to making sure no family feels alone on the journey of raising a child who is deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind. Because it is parent-driven, Michigan Hands & Voices understands the wide range of emotions and questions that can arise.
Michigan Hands & Voices is supportive of all language and communication opportunities, empowering you to make decisions that are best for your child and your family. Their vision is for all children who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind to achieve their full potential.
Michigan Hands & Voices offers a parent mentoring program, advocacy support and training, resources, and events to support all stages of your journey. Families are encouraged to reach out—especially if you’re not sure what you need or where to start.
The Family Center
The Family Center is Michigan’s statewide, parent-directed center within the Children’s Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) Division of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The Family Center is staffed by individuals with personal experience as a parent or family member of a child with special health care needs. They are dedicated to helping others along the journey of raising a child with special health care needs.
The Family Center offers information and support to families through peer-to-peer support, trainings, connecting to resources, and much more. Children are not required to be enrolled in CSHCS to receive services or support from the Family Center.
Michigan Alliance for Families
Michigan Alliance for Families is a statewide resource that connects families of children with disabilities to the information, resources, and support needed to help improve their child’s educational experience. Michigan Alliance for Families promotes parent involvement as a key factor in improving educational services and outcomes for students with disabilities.
The staff at Michigan Alliance for Families are parents or family members of individuals with disabilities and bring personal experience navigating the special education system. The organization offers workshops, resources, and one-on-one support to both families and professionals on special education and related services, and disability-specific topics.
Michigan Alliance for Families can help you understand your rights, communicate effectively about your child’s needs, and explore ways to support your child’s growth and learning.
