Non-Endorsed Content Area (NE) Endorsement
Eligibility
The Non-Endorsed Content Area (NE) endorsement is currently available to individuals in the following two situations:
- Candidates with demonstrated expertise in an area in which Michigan does not have a comparable endorsement and who wish to transition into teaching via an approved alternative route program.
- Teachers prepared out-of-state in an area for which Michigan does not have a comparable endorsement.
Placement Guidance
The following provides guidance for the placement for educators with the NE endorsement on a valid Michigan teaching certificate:
- Educators who hold the NE endorsement on a Michigan teaching certificate possess specific training and expertise in content where a specific endorsement is not available and may be placed in assignments teaching that content.
- The NE endorsement is not allowed to cover assignments for which endorsements are available. For example, Michigan has a math endorsement, so math placements must be filled with educators who hold Michigan teaching certificates with a math endorsement.
- Educators who hold the NE endorsement may also be placed in a non-endorsed content area, or an academic subject for which Michigan does not currently offer an endorsement.
- The district should look at the educator’s preparation and credentialling, beyond the Michigan teaching certificate, to make a determination on the proper placement or utilization of educators who possess the NE endorsement.
