Certification Questions
-
All individuals seeking a teaching certificate in Michigan must meet the following requirements:
- Successful completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program (e.g., math education, elementary education, English education).
- Hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
- Complete clinical experiences, including student teaching.
- Pass the appropriate Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) content and Professional Knowledge and Skills examinations. Passage of all examinations is required before recommendation for certification. Individuals attending in-state preparation programs will be advised which tests to take by their program. Individuals applying from out of state should apply first, before registering for a test.
-
Educators who have completed a preparation program or received teacher certification in another state or federally recognized Indian tribe will find information about certificate reciprocity on the Out-of-State Applicants webpage.
-
If an individual completed a teacher preparation program that includes student teaching outside of the United States (U.S.), information about gaining a Michigan teaching certificate is available on the Out-of-Country Applicants webpage.
-
First, an individual identifies a content area they would like to teach from our Education Preparation Programs webpage. Each link in the Program Name column will give a list of providers that are approved to offer a preparation program for that area.
Next, they review the preparation pathways below to identify a preferred route, provider type, and provider to contact for more information. Provider contact information can be found on the content page or on the Education Preparation Provider page.
Preparation Pathways
Traditional Route (Undergraduate)
This pathway is offered through an approved educator preparation program at a four-year Michigan college or university. Programs are designed to result in a bachelor’s degree and Michigan teaching certification. An individual must meet the minimum admission requirements of the institution and the program to be enrolled. Program advisors will help individuals determine the best available pathway for the content area. Time to degree and certification completion depends upon prior college credit coursework and program requirements.Traditional Route (Post-Bachelor's)
This pathway is offered through an approved educator preparation program at a four-year Michigan college or university for individuals who already possess a bachelor’s degree but not a teaching certificate. Some institutions offer master’s degree plus teaching certificate programs, while others offer a certification only option at the graduate level. These programs can be offered in person or online and can include evening or weekend coursework. Contact the preparation provider for more information about post-bachelor’s certification options.
Expedited Traditional Route
Expedited educator preparation programs allow an individual to complete a preparation program in an expedited manner by waiving a component of the Teacher Certification Code. Some expedited programs are residencies, allowing an individual to be employed as a full-time teacher while concurrently working toward certification. These programs are operated by Michigan colleges and universities and are often partnerships with certain districts. Some expedited programs waive dual endorsement requirements to reduce preparation time to certification in English as a Second Language and Special Education. Time to complete an expedited teaching program depends upon an individual’s prior knowledge, coursework, and experiences.
Alternative Route
Alternative route preparation programs allow an individual to be employed as a full-time teacher by leveraging existing knowledge and skills. Individuals who have subject area expertise and at least a bachelor’s degree can enroll with an approved alternative route provider. Once enrolled, provider staff will help an individual choose the correct Michigan Test(s) for Teacher Certification (MTTC). Passing the MTTC test(s) and completing initial requirements allows the provider to recommend an individual for an Interim Teaching Certificate (ITC) with content endorsement(s) that is valid for five years. An individual can progress to a Standard Teaching Certificate after a minimum of three years of satisfactory teaching under the ITC and completion of all program requirements.
Individuals in a special education alternative route must complete a 32-credit coursework sequence, serve an 8-week student teaching placement (which can be in their classroom if applicable), and pass the appropriate MTTC prior to being recommended for the ITC.
Completing this program and transferring endorsements from an ITC to a Standard Teaching Certificate can take 3-5 years. However, the time to a valid Michigan teaching certificate in the form of the ITC through this pathway can be as quick as one or two months, depending on testing schedules. Career and technical education programs are not available through this pathway.
Preparation Programs Outside of Michigan
To be employed by a Michigan school, an individual must hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate. The Michigan Department of Education does not have the authority to pre-approve out-of-state teacher preparation programs for Michigan certification. If an individual chooses to complete a teacher preparation program outside of Michigan, please note the following:
- The teacher preparation program must lead to certification in the state where the teacher preparation program is located. For example, an individual who completes a teacher preparation program through an online university located in Arizona must be sure the program is approved for an Arizona teaching certificate. Please check with an advisor for that program to ensure it leads to certification in the state where the institution is located.
- Individuals who complete an out-of-state teacher preparation program that includes student teaching are not required to get their educator certificate in the state where their preparation program is located, but they must meet all program completion requirements to be qualified for a teaching certificate in that state, except for testing.
- Individuals from out-of-state who complete an alternative route to certification program must receive their standard certificate in the state where the preparation program is located before applying for certification in Michigan.
- Once the out-of-state teacher preparation program is completed, the individual will need to submit an out-of-state application via the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS). Out-of-state teacher applicants may need to pass one or more Michigan certification tests for their initial Michigan certificate. PLEASE NOTE: Do not register for a Michigan certification test until advised to do so by an application specialist after a credential evaluation is complete. If an individual qualifies for a Michigan teaching certificate and only needs to pass the certification test(s), they will be issued a 1-year temporary teaching certificate. This will allow them to serve as a fully qualified teacher in the State of Michigan for one calendar year, providing time to pass the certification test(s).
- Individuals completing out of state programs can find additional information at MDE’s Out-of-State Applicants webpage.
