Jennifer Bonsky
Division Director of Human Food
Jennifer Bonsky serves as the Division Director of Human Food where she oversees staff and activities for the Produce Safety Unit, Enforcement and Federal Standards Unit, Local Health Services and Emergency Response Unit, and emerging issues. She also carries out and supports FDD administrative functions related to food, dairy, and produce safety inspections.
Jennifer has over 23 years with the department and started her career as a food inspector in Southeast Michigan where she inspected a variety of food facilities in the Metro Detroit area. In 2009, Jennifer was selected as a member of the Michigan’s newly formed Rapid Response Team where she served as the Food Safety Processing Specialist, participated in numerous emergency responses, and helped enhance the department’s emergency response capabilities. In 2016, she also assumed the role of project coordinator for the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards Program and helped Michigan become one of the first 10 states nationally to achieve and maintain full conformance with the standards.
Jennifer has a Bachelor of Science in environmental health from Oakland University, with a specialization in environmental and resource management. Prior to working for MDARD, she had various clerk and managerial positions in food service and food manufacturing while working for McDonald’s and for the Spartan retail grocery chain.
Jennifer has stayed close to her roots and lives in the Metro Detroit area with her husband and son. In her free time, she is a proud marching band booster, and enjoys reading, baking, and spending quality time with her family.
