LANSING – Lakeview High School in Battle Creek has won the 2018-19 Model 21st Century School Library (SL 21) award for its outstanding dedication to collaborative instruction among school library staffers, educators, and community groups, the Library of Michigan (LM) announced today.
The Model SL 21 program, based on the LM’s School Library 21st Century benchmarks, recognizes particularly high-quality school libraries and library media specialists and promotes the development of similar initiatives in other schools.
Lakeview’s school library, part of the Lakeview School District in Calhoun County, was chosen for the 2018-19 SL 21 award for its focus on blended, collaborative instruction, including courses on the Holocaust. A recent example is the collaborative project, based in the Battle Creek area, with the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center for Days of Remembrance 2018.
State Librarian Randy Riley commended Dr. Margaret Lincoln, District Librarian, and Principal Jeffrey Bohl for providing high-quality experiences for Lakeview School District students.
“Understanding our history is vital to understanding the world today. Lakeview High School is providing a sound footing for its students to go out into the world,” Riley said. Lakeview’s school library holds Exemplary status in the SL 21 program through July 2020. LM staff select the Model SL 21 Library after reviewing applications from school librarians across the state. Applicants provide information such as curriculum, co-teaching activities, community collaboration, and participation in educational associations. Lakeview High School library staffers are available for consultation with, and visits from, other educators who want to learn more about the successful program. Interested persons may contact Margaret Lincoln at email@example.com or Karren Reish at firstname.lastname@example.org.
