LANSING – East Middle School’s Library Media Center has won the state’s 2017-18 Model 21st Century School Library (SL 21) award for excelling at the important library skillset of collaboration, the Library of Michigan (LM) announced today.
The school library, part of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, won the SL 21 honor for its focus on services and programs for students and staff, and extensive professional activities promoting school libraries and quality services statewide.
State Librarian Randy Riley commended Librarian and Technology Integrationist Katherine Lester and Principal Scott Burek for providing a high-quality program.
“Students need a high level of information literacy for success in the modern world. The library program and staff at East Middle School are working to provide the best for their students’ achievement,” Riley said.
The Model SL 21 program recognizes particularly high-quality school libraries and library media specialists, and promotes the development of similar initiatives in other schools. The program is based on the LM’s School Library 21st Century benchmarks. (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/lm_SL21_313134_7.pdf)
The East Middle School Library Media Center holds Exemplary status in the SL 21 program through July 2019. Its designation as Michigan’s Model 21st School Library is for the 2017-18 school year.
LM staff selected the Model SL 21 Library after reviewing applications from school librarians across the state. Applicants provided information such as curriculum, co-teaching activities, community collaboration, and participation in educational associations.
East Middle School Library Media Center staffers are available for consultation with and visits from other educators who want to learn more about their successful program. If interested, contact Katherine Lester at email@example.com Karren Reish at firstname.lastname@example.org.
