May is Teacher Appreciation Month and This Week is Teacher
Appreciation Week
LANSING – Videos of students in Michigan expressing gratitude to their teachers are a part of state efforts to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Month in May.
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and State Board of Education are recognizing Michigan teachers for all they do for children—and sharing words of appreciation from their students—during the month. MDE is also celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8.
“One of the best parts of my job is visiting classrooms across Michigan and seeing firsthand the impact our teachers have on students each day,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “Our teachers truly put Students First, and they deserve our deep appreciation and support.”
Recruiting and retaining quality educators supports Goal 7 of Michigan's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, to increase the number of certified teachers in areas of shortage. Teacher Appreciation Month contributes to those efforts.
“The State Board of Education and I want to express our appreciation to Michigan’s many outstanding teachers,” said State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh. “Hearing from students about their teachers is one of the best ways to see the critically important role educators are playing in the future of our children and our state.”
To show gratitude for teachers’ commitment to their profession, MDE invited families, parents, guardians and community members to help highlight the state’s remarkable teachers by submitting videos of students expressing appreciation for their teachers.
These videos are featured on MDE’s YouTube channel and the Teacher Appreciation Month webpage. The MDE Office of Educator Excellence’s Facebook social media page will promote the videos throughout the month.
