State Board of Education Will Hold Its November Meeting in Genesee County

Board Members Taking Some Meetings on the Road to Increase
Engagement with Public Around the State

LANSING – As part of an effort to improve public engagement, the State Board of Education is taking its November meeting on the road to the Flint area.

The Nov. 10 State Board of Education meeting will be held at the Genesee Intermediate School District’s Genesee Career Institute Conference Center, 5081 Torrey Road in Mundy Township outside of Flint.

“Public education is a statewide responsibility, and the voices of communities across Michigan should help shape the decisions we make,” said State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh. “By taking our meetings into communities, we are creating more opportunities to hear directly from students, families, educators and local leaders about their experiences, challenges and priorities. We also want to see firsthand the innovative work happening in our schools, recognize what is working and better understand where additional support is needed. This is about listening, learning and strengthening the connection between the State Board and the people we serve.”

The Nov. 10 meeting begins at 9:30 a.m., with public comment at 1 p.m. State Board of Education meetings typically last until about 4 p.m. Board meetings are usually held at the John A. Hannah Building in Lansing.

“I am pleased that the State Board of Education is putting Students First by visiting the communities where they learn,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “Through my statewide listening tour, I have learned a great deal about what local schools need from the state to support student success. Holding State Board of Education meetings on the road creates a similar opportunity to listen, learn and collaborate with local educators, students and families. We are here to hear their perspectives, recognize the great work happening in our schools and work together to improve student learning.”

The meeting agenda will be posted in advance on the State Board of Education’s Agendas webpage.

“Genesee Intermediate School District is both honored and excited to be the first district to host the State Board of Education on its tour of schools across our great state,” said Superintendent Dr. Steven Tunnicliff. “We are proud of our collective work among our 21 local school districts and 13 public school academies across Genesee County and look forward to highlighting how we are working together to support all students from birth through age 26. This collaboration aims to improve student outcomes in traditional areas such as reading and math but also supports innovative programming from early childhood to early college, all while meeting students’ unique needs and interests from special education to career technical education. I applaud the State Board of Education and State Superintendent Maleyko for their willingness to see and hear from the students and communities we serve across Michigan.
