Teacher Recertification
Certificate Types and Requirements
Teaching certificates are valid for 5 years and expire June 30. Certificates are able to be renewed beginning January 1 of the year they expire or, once requirements are met, progressed at any time to a more advanced certificate. Certificates have the same renewal and progression requirements regardless of if they are valid or expired.
There is no state-level penalty for a certificate lapse, but there may be local employment implications. Individuals should work with their district to ensure requirements are met for renewal and the district may apply for temporary credentials in the case of a lapse.

This 2nd tier certificate is a recognition of additional literacy knowledge and teaching expertise and is also intended to reflect an educator’s completion of new teacher mentoring and induction supports into the profession. It is valid for up to 5 years and progression may be applied for any time requirements are met.
