Science Standards & Implementation

What are K-12 students learning in science?

The Michigan K-12 Science Standards are built from the extensive body of research A Framework for K-12 Science Education. This same framework was used in the development of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), for which Michigan was a lead partner. Therefore, NGSS resources are aligned to the Michigan K-12 Science Standards and can be used to support implementation but will not fully address the Michigan specific contexts.

The Michigan graduation requirements for science can be met in two ways:

  1. Proficiency in State Content Standards for Science (3 credits)
  2. Proficiency in some State Content Standards for Science (2 credits) and completion of a department-approved formal Career and Technical Education (CTE) program (1 credit)
