VISTA Assignment Objectives and Member Activities

Goal of the Project:  Provide capacity building support to assist MBK-Michigan VISTA Members and their communities with developing and implementing plans to address some or all of the six MBK milestones.

Objective of the Assignment Develop and conduct on-going support and training to equip MBK VISTAs with knowledge and skills related to the MBK Initiative and building the volunteer base at their community level.

Member Activities:

1.Stay abreast of national, state and regional work for the MBK Initiative and keep Members and Host Site Supervisors informed

2.Increasing volunteerism – inform and support Members to utilize and promote the Volunteer Platform-InnerView

3.Assist coordination of National Days of Service (September 11th National Day of Remembrance, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, Global Youth Service Day and AmeriCorps Week)

4.Facilitate and encourage peer learning among the VISTAs

5.Explore and implement a data tracking system to examine progress of communities meeting their goals

Objective of the Assignment

Initiate a sustainable asset mapping strategy listing pertinent resources for youth and in particular boys and young men of color across the state of Michigan.

Member Activities:

1.Research and develop best practices in asset mapping for Youth and MBK Initiative

2.Identify process for “vetting” resources

3.Orient members to asset mapping with uniformity across the state

4.Create web based training opportunities

5.Work towards advancing a sustainable plan for asset mapping

Objective of the Assignment

Enhance VISTA project and member effectiveness by facilitating the MBK VISTA team, supporting team members in their work, and monitoring member monthly reports. Assist in the retention of members by supporting, mentoring and providing leadership.

          Member Activities:

1.Survey Members and report to VISTA Supervisor if OSOT was effective for Member’s on-boarding at the organization and community level

2.Identify learning needs of VISTAs and coordinate ongoing professional development; maintain professional development records for all VISTAs  

3.Conduct one-on-one on-going meetings with each VISTA member to review VAD goals, assess progress, address member needs, etc. at a minimum of monthly contact

4.Assist VISTAs in clarifying problems and creating their own solutions, involving the supervisor if the VISTA cannot resolve the issue otherwise

5.Train VISTA members on the organization’s reporting requirements and assist with reporting needs, escalating issues to appropriate supervisor

6.Collect monthly reports from each VISTA member, review data and summarize for MCSC Vista Supervisor

7.Provide support and leadership to VISTA Members with their career development plans

Objective of the Assignment

Enhance VISTA project stability and sustainability.     

Member Activities:

1.Guide VISTA members in creating their own sustainability manuals to assist subsequent VISTAs with continuing MBK Initiative project implementation

2.Archive all significant materials created and document all procedures for implementing the project, for convenient future retrieval by organization staff, future VISTAs and VISTA leaders

3.Suggest changes to the program based on challenges and successes VISTAs have experienced         

4.In collaboration with MCSC staff members, create and implement a written plan for project sustainability
