AmeriCorps VISTA member helps with Women's Commission Project
What started as an idea suggested during the interviewing process for an internship with the Michigan Women’s Commission turned into a social media campaign to feature Michigan women in leadership roles.
Gabby Sheets, now an AmeriCorps VISTA member suggested the idea, dubbed #MIWomenWednesday. Now, she serves full-time on the project she suggested nearly two years ago.
“The goal of #MIWomenWednesday is to show the diversity of leadership, educate about a variety of leadership roles and career types, encourage women to achieve their next career goal, and inspire support for measures that will further the post-pandemic economic recovery for women,” said Gabby. Gabby currently serves as the Social Media and Events Coordinator where she manages the social media platforms as well as helps Michigan Women’s Commission CEO Cheryl Bergman and CSO Shannon Garrett. The Commission is part of the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
Gabby recently graduated from Michigan State University and double-majored in Social Relations and Policy and Women’s and Gender Studies with a concentration in sexuality and conflict. She also minored in LGBTQIA+ Studies. While serving with AmeriCorps, she is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Social Justice and Human Rights at Arizona State University.
“The initiatives and the work that the Commission does--working to increase gender equity across the state in a variety of sectors--was, and still continues to be, something that I am extremely passionate about,” said Gabby.
