East Lansing
Pat Munshaw is an 82-year-old retired registered nurse who stepped out of retirement to help administer COVID-19 vaccinations.
“I actually had not given a shot in 55 years,” said Pat, “but it’s like riding a bike because you are never going to forget how to do it. It was a simple decision to volunteer because I have the time, I have the skill set, and they needed help.”
Pat graduated from Marquette University College of Nursing in 1961 and taught nursing at Mercy Central School of Nursing at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing from 1961 until 1968. Pat then went to Lansing General Hospital where she became manager of education and training. While working, Pat completed her Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota and retired in 1993 as Senior Vice President at Lansing General. Although she retired from working in nursing administration fulltime, Pat continued to work part-time as a physician recruiter for area hospitals for an additional ten years and as a case manager at the Tri-County Office on Aging.
Pat volunteered two times a week through both the Ingham County Health Department and Sparrow Hospital. She administered nearly 1,000 COVID-19 vaccinations and recruited other volunteers to help at the vaccine sites.
“My technique is to treat the shot like throwing a dart,” Pat said proudly. “I hit the muscle, do it fast, in and out - no pain. Everybody is happy.”
In addition to her help throughout the pandemic and within her career at Lansing General Hospital, Pat has volunteered in a variety of other ways. Some examples include with the Rotary Club of Lansing Foundation, Boarshead and Williamston theatres, Greater Lansing Arts Council, Capital Region Community Foundation, Capital Area United Way and the Capital Area Transportation Authority, along with the Bircham Hills Retirement Center.
Pat has also served as an election poll worker and served on many other Lansing community volunteer boards. She has also volunteered at the Lansing Catholic Adoration Center Chapel every Sunday evening from midnight to 1 a.m. since 2001. Pat is also an avid Michigan State basketball fan, as she has been a season ticketholder for 44 years. She is also an avid duplicate brigde player.
“I get as much out of my volunteering as the organizations I serve,” said Pat. “It’s a win-win.”
