Education Service Leader - The Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance Youth Council
Education Service Leader Award: honors schools, colleges, universities and other organizations that support youth making a difference in their communities.
The Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance Youth Council has been actively working in the Cody Rouge community since 2007 to make it a better place to live for young people. The youth council is part of the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance, which has spent the past 10 years strengthening the Cody Rouge Neighborhood. DTE Energy, General Motors, Rock Ventures/Quicken Loans and the Skillman Foundation have partnered with the Alliance to connect investments and projects to support children and families in a 40-block area in the Cody Rouge community. The Youth Council is made up of young people ranging in ages 12 to 18 that live, work, worship or attend school in the Cody Rouge neighborhood. They advise community leaders of the unique youth perspective, actively participate in community service projects and plan youth and community events for the neighborhood. Recently, youth were concerned with the lack of safe areas at bus stops and as a result created Project No Stand Zone, a community initiative supported by the Detroit 2 Nepal Foundation to place benches at local bus stops. They partnered with Sit on it Detroit, an organization that builds benches out of reclaimed wood from abandoned homes and businesses in the city. The project was a great success and example of the importance of engaging youth in being a part of making a difference in their community. “Cody Rouge runs through my veins. I lived in this community for a number of years. I want everyone to see it how I see it. It’s a community that is very beautiful.” said Dehvin Banks, president of the Cody Rouge Community Youth Council and a freshman at Eastern Michigan University.
