Lifetime Humanitarian - Larry Hines
Lifetime Humanitarian Award: honors individuals or families that have demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding civic and charitable responsibility to a community or organization.
Larry Hines of Muskegon believes that corporate responsibility goes beyond the walls of the organization and beyond the boardroom.
Larry is the founder and president of Hines Corporation, an industrial holding company that employs about 700 people across North America. He has always made it clear that being a successful company means giving back to the communities where he conducts business. Larry sets the example by supporting civic, cultural and professional institutions and initiatives in Muskegon.
"Larry has become one of my personal heroes," said Bob Scolnik, retired businessman and a Muskegon County commissioner. "He has taken several companies and turned them around, and he always has been supportive of the community. Larry has been a major success and he is willing to give back to the community."
From 2002 through 2013, Larry served on the Muskegon Museum of Art Foundation board and under his leadership the museum grew their capacity for annual fundraising. With his leadership, the foundation conducted the largest campaign of its type in Muskegon, raising more than $7.5 million for the endowed and support funds of the Muskegon Museum of Art.
Since 2010, Larry has been the Campaign Chairman for several local organizations including the Community Foundation of Muskegon County and No More Sidelines, which assists children and young adults with special needs. He has also helped with the development and creation of downtown Muskegon's Farmers Market; Grand Valley State University’s year-round research facility and field station; and the Muskegon area Angels Group, who assist fledgling and growing companies in the area.
“When I think of all the great things Muskegon and West Michigan has to offer, I know it would not be the same without the impact of Larry Hines,” said State Rep. Holly Hughes. “He has dedicated his life to serving others and making Muskegon, and Michigan, a better place to live.”
