Outstanding National Service - MI GEAR UP VISTA Project
Outstanding National Service Program Award: honors organizations that provide a high-quality national service program that yields a significant impact in a Michigan community.
MI GEAR UP VISTA PROJECT (Michigan Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is Michigan’s largest college access program. MI GEAR UP helps low-income students in struggling schools across the state by connecting them with academic counseling, tutoring, mentoring, parent involvement activities and financial literacy. The MI GEAR UP VISTA project, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Treasury’s MI Student Aid, helps make college accessible, affordable and achievable. A database of Michigan scholarships, housed at Treasury and developed by a MI GEAR UP VISTA, has matched over 2,000 Michigan students to scholarship opportunities since its launch last November. In collaboration with MI Student Aid, the MI GEAR UP VISTA project has developed and implemented a statewide progressive series of workshops to prepare students financially for college. “The MI GEAR UP VISTA program is an innovative, effective, and impactful program,” said Shannon Price of the Michigan Department of Treasury’s Student Financial Services Bureau. “We could not do the work that we do without MI GEAR UP VISTAs who work hard to educate students and families on the importance and accessibility of a college education.”
