Outstanding National Service - Michigan Habitat's AmeriCorps Program
Outstanding National Service Program Award: honors organizations that provide a high-quality national service program that yields a significant impact in a Michigan community.
MICHIGAN HABITAT’S AMERICORPS PROGRAM serves low-income families statewide by providing housing assistance and reducing utility costs through energy-efficient housing. The program places AmeriCorps members with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and housing-related nonprofit agencies across the state. AmeriCorps members assist with homeowner support and engagement, energy-efficient construction, neighborhood revitalization and volunteer recruitment. The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. AmeriCorps members in the Michigan Habitat program put that mission into action. “Just knowing that the children we see are in a home that is safe, comfortable, and where community roots can be established left me awestruck,” said former AmeriCorps member Blake Hamilton. “Thinking about how these families are now in a safe, affordable home that relieves some of the stressors and woes that those without a home are faced with strengthened my resolve in my service year.” Since 2015, program members have recruited over 5,000 volunteers to assist in construction-related activities, and served over 1,500 individuals through housing-related services.
