Outstanding Volunteer Organization - Crim Fitness Foundation
Outstanding Volunteer Organization Award: honors service clubs, nonprofit, faith-based, veteran, disaster preparedness and other organizations that make a demonstrated difference in their community.
CRIM FITNESS FOUNDATION in Flint implements a multitude of programs focused on physical activity and community education to fight the epidemic of childhood obesity. These programs include training and healthy eating, nutrition education, sports-based youth development and gardening. The foundation was launched in 1977 by Michigan House Speaker Bobby Crim and his assistant, Lois Craig. Crim Programs engage volunteers, as well as AmeriCorps members from FoodCorps, Coach Across America and AmeriCorps LISC. The Crim Fitness Foundation has had a massive impact on the Flint community, providing physical activity and nutrition education to over 10,000 youth and engaging thousands more area residents in wrap-around programs for community education and health. By inspiring people to give their time and talent to Flint and Genesee County, the Crim has made this community a better place to live, work, and play,” said Jenny McArdle, United Way of Genesee County Civic Engagement Manager.
