Volunteer of the Year - Treger Strasberg
Volunteer of the Year Award: honors an individual who strives to improve the lives of neighbors, friends, community or congregation through volunteerism
TREGER STRASBERG of Birmingham saw homeless families in Detroit moving into houses from the shelter, but knew they need more than just a structure to make it a home. With 10 years of advertising and marketing experience, Treger decided to use her personal skill set to start her own nonprofit. In 2009, Treger co-founded Humble Design, a nonprofit that repurposes gently used home goods and furniture to provide comfortable home interiors for homeless families. The group starts by getting the families off the floor and into beds. They then move in the other essentials: Lamps, desks, dressers, pots and pans and kitchen tables, transforming the home into a place of rest and recovery. Since its inception, Humble Design has serviced over 800 families in Detroit alone and have now expanded nationwide with the help of U-Haul. “For the mothers, I see relief. For the children, I see comfort and overwhelming joy,” Treger said.
