Youth Volunteer of the Year - Mac-Rufus Umeokolo
Youth Volunteer of the Year Award: honors individuals who are age 25 or younger who have already begun making a significant difference in their community through service.
Mac-Rufus Umeokolo of Detroit values service and has dedicated his young life to appreciating others and sharing whatever skills and gifts he has. Born in Nigeria, Mac-Rufus shares duo citizenship and moved to the United States with his mother six years ago. Since then, he continues to be energized through service to show his appreciation for the opportunity to learn and live in a free society. He made pillowcases, blankets and neck supports for veterans in hospice, sent packages overseas for active military, as well as provided food for the homeless on the streets of Detroit. He recently volunteered with Habitat for Humanity by renovating homes. He rises early on holidays to help deliver Meals on Wheels on Detroit’s Eastside and participates in clean-up activities in the community to improve the environment. Currently, he volunteers with the Wayne State University National Society of Collegiate Scholars Chapter and with his campus church group serving families in need. "Some people do not choose this life, but it happens,” Mac-Rufus said. “We have so much and can do so much. We have to thank God for being alive so we can help others."
