Saint Mark Community Outreach Center
Saint Mark Community Outreach Center
The Saint Mark Community Outreach Center (SMCOC) was established in 2018 with a strong commitment to addressing the pressing social determinants that adversely impact the mental and physical health of residents in the North Flint area. The mission centers on creating a supportive environment that fosters holistic health and well-being while striving to empower individuals and families with resources that enhance their quality of life. Since its inception, SMCOC has been deeply rooted in the community, guided by a vision of uplifting the lives of those facing systemic challenges. The journey began as a response to the escalating suicide rates in the region, which prompted efforts to establish a dedicated task force to investigate the issue. The findings of this study not only underscored the urgent need for suicide prevention but also illuminated the broader array of social disparities affecting the community.
The capital project at the SMCOC involves a comprehensive renovation and improvement initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility, safety, and infrastructure. This project has been developed collaboratively by our organization's leadership and key stakeholders.
Description of the Capital Project:
1. Accessibility Upgrades: The project includes critical upgrades to improve accessibility within the facility. This involves the installation of a vertical chair lift for the basement level, the construction of ramps to provide access to various parts of the building, and the installation of new handrails to ensure safety.
2. Roof Replacement: Addressing structural concerns, the project also encompasses replacing the existing roof, which is currently experiencing leaks. This will not only preserve the integrity of the building but also ensure a safe and comfortable environment for our community members.
In summary, the development of this capital project was a collaborative effort involving input from the board, the community, architectural and construction experts, and a dedicated fundraising committee. It was initiated in response to identified needs within the facility, focusing on accessibility improvements and addressing critical maintenance issues such as the leaking roof.
