Soo Locks Childrens Museum
Soo Locks Children's Museum, Inc.
The Soo Locks Children's Museum, Inc. (SLCM) is a nonprofit corporation founded in 2016 and based in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The effort to establish a children's museum in Sault Ste. Marie was initiated based on the desire to make a difference in this underserved community and region by offering much-needed and unique experiences for children aged 2-12 years. With the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District being the largest geographic district in Michigan, covering approximately 4,000 square miles and serving three counties – including Luce County, a designated underserved county by the MACC - 19 school districts, and 4 islands, it was determined that the SLCM would serve a great need.
A children’s museum will be an essential resource for children and families in the region, where engaging and developmentally stimulating amenities are few and far between. The SLCM will provide an immersive and interactive learning environment that fosters curiosity, creativity, and exploration. This dedicated space will offer hands-on exhibits, diverse programming, and community engagement opportunities, inspiring lifelong learning, cultural appreciation, and collaborative experiences for all visitors.
