Laboratory & Equipment Services

The Laboratory and Equipment Services Section provides a full array of analytical and field equipment services to our customers through two units, the Occupational Health Laboratory and the Instrument Calibration and Maintenance Unit.

The Occupational Health Laboratory (OHL) has maintained accreditation by the American Industrial Hygiene Association for analysis of industrial hygiene samples since 1978. The OHL provides validated sampling methods, sampling media, and analytical services to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other State of Michigan agencies including the departments of Environmental Quality, Community Health, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and State Police. Validated analyses include industrial hygiene samples, indoor air quality, and bulk and airborne asbestos samples. Please visit the following links for more information.

Chemical Information Manual v5.0

The Occupational Health Laboratory maintains the Chemical Information Manual (CIM) to provide substance specific exposure limits, physical symptoms, and approved sampling methods for our customers.  Routine analyses for the OHL are found in chapter 2, and non-routine analyses are in chapter 3.  Please contact the OHL prior to sampling for any chapter 3 analyses.

All chapters and appendices are in Adobe Acrobat "PDF" format with the exception of "Chapter 2 Reduced Format" which is an Excel file.  To search a chapter or appendix for a specific substance or phrase, open the file, click "Search" from the tool bar, enter the search criteria and click the "Search" button.

Please direct any questions to the LESS Program Manager  by email or phone 517-284-2900.

About “PDF” Forms

In the past, LESS has experienced problems with forms being accidentally altered by users, or not displaying properly because of software settings.  In an effort to limit these issues, LESS is increasing the use of the Adobe Acrobat® portable document file format (PDF) for interactive forms. All LESS interactive forms have been created using Adobe Acrobat 7.0, and will require Acrobat Reader version 7.0 or newer to utilize the automation features.  If you have an earlier version of Acrobat Reader, you may have trouble using the "Print" or "Email" buttons on the form.  Often you will still be able to print the form by using the "print" button on the tool bar, or selecting "File/Print" from the dropdown menu.

If you are experiencing problems with any of these forms, do not use an earlier version since this would be a violation of LESS's document control policy.  If necessary, contact LESS and we will fax or mail copies for use until your Adobe Acrobat Reader version can be updated.

You may also notice that some forms have an "Uncontrolled" watermark.  This is to indicate that the form came from this web page, and is not a controlled copy that was distributed to you.  These forms will be accepted as long as they are the current version and have not been altered.

Please remember that 91s sampling forms MUST be filled out electronically or using ink (NO PENCIL!).   Any 91s that has been copied or has correction fluid applied will be rejected...THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.  If you need to make a correction on a 91s, draw a single line through the error, write the correction next to it, AND initial it.
