Since 2007 MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division and Macomb Community College (Macomb) have partnered on the MIOSHA Training Institute (MTI). Employers, employees, and other interested parties can benefit from attending seminars through the MTI. The MTI reaches out, educates, and leads the state’s employers and employees in improving and advancing workplace safety and health.
Since 2007, MIOSHA’s Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division and Macomb Community College have partnered on the MIOSHA Training Institute (MTI) Certificate Program. The certificate program offers participants an opportunity to be recognized for their educational efforts and increased technical expertise.
Level One certificates are offered in General Industry Safety and Health, Construction Safety and Health, and Occupational Health. Level Two certificates are offered in Compliance for General Industry, Compliance for Construction, and Safety and Health Management Systems. Information about required and elective courses for each certificate can be found in the progress log/application form.
A Level One certificate must be achieved prior to the application for/award of a Level Two Safety and Health Management Systems certificate. Additionally, a Level One safety and health certificate must be achieved prior to the application for/award of its corresponding Level Two compliance certificate.
Level Two Safety and Health Management Systems certificate holders can save on college tuition by participating in the MTI to Higher Education Program.
Many Level One courses are designed for new safety and health coordinators, committee members, and others interested in general safety and health information. Level One allows the participant to begin the process of developing a SHMS while becoming familiar with MIOSHA Standards and other relevant topics.
To achieve the certificate, participants in the General Industry Safety and Health track must successfully complete four courses, of which OSHA General Industry 10-Hour and Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs are required, along with two electives from General Industry Level One courses. Participants in the Construction Safety and Health track must successfully complete seven courses of which OSHA Construction 10-Hour, MIOSHA Construction Part 45 – Fall Protection, and Health Hazards in Construction are required along with four other electives from Construction Level One courses. Three certificate programs will be offered in Level Two. The Safety and Health Management Systems certificate will provide in-depth information on the administration and management of workplace safety and health systems. This program is designed for those with responsibility for implementing these systems. Participants will be required to take six core courses to obtain this certificate. A Level One or Occupational Health certificate must be achieved prior to the award of a Level Two Safety and Health Management Systems certificate.
The General Industry compliance certificate requires four core courses and five electives. The Construction compliance certificate requires that participants successfully pass any eight courses not previously taken from the Construction track. A Level One certificate must be achieved prior to the award of a Level Two compliance certificate.
The Occupational Health certificate is offered to those participants who successfully complete four required health courses and two electives from the health track. Successful completion of the designated health courses on a previous Progress Log/Application Form prior to March 3, 2023, will count towards the completion of the Occupational Health Certificate.
