Dental Cephalometric and Tomographic Shielding Guidelines
Radiation shielding plan review approval should be obtained from the Radiation Safety Section for dental cephalometric and tomographic installations. Rule 390(2) requires shielding of the primary beam. The area of the wall or floor struck by the primary, plus an area extending 1 foot beyond, should be shielded with 1/16 inch lead equivalent shielding. A brick or block outside wall would not normally require additional shielding.
An operator's barrier is not required for cephalometric or tomographic machines that operate at less than 100 mA. Machines at 100 mA or more would need an operator's barrier and the operators would need to be provided with radiation dosimeters.
