Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development Elects 2024 Officers and Welcomes New Commissioner

LANSING — During its regularly scheduled meeting today, the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development elected its new officers for 2024 and welcomed new Commissioner Kathy Garthe.
Monica Wyant of Grand Rapids was elected Chair of the Commission. Wyant is the Produce Business Manager for Meijer, Inc., where she is responsible for sourcing fresh fruits and vegetables for the grocery chain. Wyant was re-appointed to the Commission by the Governor for a term beginning on January 1, 2024, and ending on December 31, 2027.
Andy Chae of Detroit was elected Vice Chair of the Commission. Chae was appointed to the Commission by the Governor on July 7, 2021. He is the owner/operator of FishEye Farms in Detroit.
Dr. Felicia Wu of Okemos was elected secretary. Wu was appointed to the Commision by the Governor on March 14, 2023.
Additionally, the Commission welcomed new Commissioner Kathy Garthe to her first meeting. Garthe was appointed by Governor Whitmer for a term effective January 1, 2024, and ending on December 31, 2027. She succeeds Juliette King-McAvoy whose term expired.
The Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development has the responsibility to recommend, and in some cases determine, policy on food, agricultural, and rural development issues. The Commission is a bipartisan body of five citizens appointed by the Governor.
