MDE Office of Career and Technical Education Director Earns Lifetime Achievement Award

Other Michigan Educators, Business Officials Honored

LANSING – The director of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Office of Career and Technical Education earned lifetime achievement honors as others from Michigan also won awards at a recent regional conference.

Dr. Brian Pyles won the Lifetime Achievement and Hall of Fame Award at the Association for Career and Technical Education Region 1 Conference in New York City. Pyles, a Lansing resident, has been state director since 2018 and has worked in career and technical education for more than 30 years.

“Dr. Pyles and the other educators and businesses honored for their accomplishments help Michigan high school students attain the knowledge and skills they need to prepare for careers,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “Career and technical education is a key part of Goal 4 of Michigan’s Strategic Top 10 Education Plan: to expand secondary learning opportunities for all students.”

Other regional winners from Michigan were:

  • Postsecondary Professional of the Year: Dr. Kenneth Flowers, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, Lake Michigan College.
  • Administrator of the Year: Lucas Schrauben, director of secondary programs, Holt High School.
  • Counseling and Career Development Professional of the Year: Vanita Wilson, counselor, Genesee Career Institute, Flint.
  • Teacher of the Year: Jared Diephouse, power equipment instructor, Northwest Education Services Career Tech, Traverse City.
  • New Teacher of the Year: Brielle Haupt, health occupations career and technical education teacher, Brighton Area High School.
  • Outstanding Business/Education Partnership of the Year: Farm Bureau Insurance, Eaton Regional Educational Service Agency.
  • Advisory Committee Member of the Year: Patrick Curry, owner, Fullerton Tool Company, Saginaw.

Michigan’s region also includes the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.

The award recipients advance as nominees at the National Association for Career and Technical Education Vision Conference in San Antonio, Texas, in December.
