Library of Michigan Wants Your Yearbook as
It Builds Statewide Collection
LANSING – Dated hair styles and clothing. Photos from the classrooms, hallways, and sports fields you roamed when you were young. Memories of popular music, TV, and movies from days gone by. Advertisements for local businesses.
Yearbooks offer a unique snapshot of Michigan’s communities, which capture not just academic achievements but also the social, cultural, and historical landscape of the state through generations. They also provide a rich resource for tracing family histories, local communities, and Michigan's evolution over time.
That’s why the Library of Michigan is accepting yearbooks from across Michigan as part of an initiative to build a comprehensive collection of Michigan yearbooks. The goal is to preserve complete sets of yearbooks from every high school, college or university, and vocational institution from all areas of Michigan.
“Yearbooks are more than just names and photos,” said State Librarian Mr. Randy Riley. “They are time capsules to our youth, which chronicle our own individual stories and which bridge us to the eras of past Michiganders.”
Researchers can already access several thousand yearbooks at the Library of Michigan, 702 W. Kalamazoo St. in Lansing. However, many areas of the state still need to be represented in the collection, primarily the rural areas of the Lower Peninsula and across the Upper Peninsula. Schools, libraries, and members of the public are invited to contribute to the project by donating their yearbooks to the Library of Michigan.
For more information about the yearbook collection initiative or other ways to donate to the Library of Michigan, visit Michigan.gov/LibraryGift. Potential donors are asked to contact library staff ahead of time to ensure donations do not duplicate items already in the collection, which can be done by calling 517-335-1477 or emailing Librarian@Michigan.gov. This project aligns with the library's mission to preserve the story of Michigan and ensure it is available for future research, education, and exploration.
