LANSING – New State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko at the State Board of Education meeting formally unveiled a new banner highlighting his Students First motto.

The blue, black and white sign also includes the Michigan Department of Education logo and reflects Maleyko’s long-standing commitment to placing students at the center of every decision. Maleyko, who became state superintendent in December, plans to continue to spread the “Students First” message using the handheld sign and motto, just as he did during his tenure as superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools.

While in Dearborn, Maleyko posed for countless selfies with students, staff and others while holding the Students First banner, sharing those moments through social media as a visible reminder of his leadership philosophy. He had been using an “unofficial” sign since starting his new state superintendent job before the official banner was designed.

“Students First has always been my motto,” Maleyko said. “It is more than holding up a sign. It is about living that commitment every day. Every decision that we make must be grounded in putting students first. While the role of superintendent involves navigating many competing interests, I will always remind myself and others that we are here to make a difference for all Michigan students.”

In addition to promoting the “Students First” approach, Maleyko has emphasized during his first weeks on the job his commitments to improving student literacy, collaboration, and listening to stakeholders in updating and strengthening Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.
