Literacy, Mathematics Improvements Are Among Priorities of New Michigan Dept. of Education Office
May 12, 2026
LANSING – Reviewing the profile that describes what high school graduates should have ability to do, continuing to implement the state’s new literacy and dyslexia laws and developing a statewide mathematics framework are among the important tasks of a new office within the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
The new Office of Curriculum and Instruction also has on its to do list expansion of supports for social studies and science instruction and continuation of supports to grow innovative and flexible learning options for students.
“This new office is providing support to local districts and educators to ensure that Michigan students have access to high-quality, evidence-based, innovative learning opportunities,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “The Office of Curriculum and Instruction will help us meet the goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.”
State Board of Education members during today’s monthly meeting received an update on the new office, which was created in January.
“The new office will focus on putting Students First,” said Michigan Department of Education Deputy Superintendent Dr. Delsa Chapman. “It is grounded in an Instructional Coherence framework, which means we will work to ensure students experience a seamless learning experience throughout their school day, across grade levels, and in all content areas.”
Dr. Chapman leads the MDE Division of Assessment, School Improvement, and Systems Support, which now also includes the Office of Curriculum and Instruction.
“The mission of the Office of Curriculum and Instruction is to put Students First through engaging, effective and equitable learning experiences,” added Dr. Jen Saylor, who was selected to be director of the new office after previously serving in that position on an interim basis. “The office provides support to local education agencies and educators to ensure each of Michigan’s students have access to high-quality, evidence-based, and innovative learning opportunities.”
The Office of Curriculum and Instruction supports several goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, including Goal 2, to improve early literacy achievement; Goal 4, to expand secondary learning opportunities for all students; and Goal 5, to increase the percentage of all students who graduate from high school.
