Legislation Puts Students First, State Superintendent Says
LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education is issuing the following statement from State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko regarding today’s State House approval of House Bills 5697 and 5646. The two bills expand upon efforts to ensure the science of reading is used when Michigan children learn literacy skills.
The bills would mandate state-funded science of reading training for grades K-5 teachers who teach reading and require faculty at educator preparation programs to receive training in the science of reading.
“These bills put Students First and represent an important step toward improving literacy achievement for all Michigan students, which remains the top priority of the Michigan Department of Education. The department supports the bills and appreciates the bipartisan support in the House.
“If enacted, these bills would help ensure that Michigan educators have access to high-quality training in evidence-based literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading. They would also strengthen educator preparation programs by helping ensure that future teachers enter the classroom equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to teach every child to read.
“Reading is the foundation for success in school and in life. These bills would build on Michigan's ongoing efforts to improve literacy outcomes and provide educators with the tools and support they need to help all students become strong readers.”
