Michigan Department of Education partners with Michigan Virtual on statewide AI guidance for K–12 schools
June 25, 2026
New state guidance and Michigan Virtual's AI Planning Guide form a framework for
districts navigating artificial intelligence integration
LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has partnered with Michigan Virtual to reach a significant milestone in education technology with the release of the Artificial Intelligence Guidance Resource, which includes the Michigan Department of Education Comprehensive AI Guide for Districts. This guidance formally positions Michigan as a national leader in responsible, equitable, and instructionally grounded AI integration for K–12 education.
Together, MDE's new guidance and Michigan Virtual's AI Planning Guide and Integration Framework represent a cohesive, Michigan-specific framework for AI integration, one that is implementation-focused and rooted in instructional practice.
“We know that artificial intelligence isn’t going anywhere and that as educational leaders it’s imperative we continue to do the research and provide the guidance schools and districts need to put their Students First,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “Producing implementation frameworks and promoting safe and equitable access are key to Michigan’s future success as AI continues to expand and grow.”
The impact of this coordinated approach is already visible across the state. One example of Michigan Virtual's support is through the recently released AI guidance document from the Crawford-Oscoda-Ogemaw-Roscommon Intermediate School District (COOR ISD). This is now available to all of the ISD’s member districts to personalize and to systematize the integration process and expectations. COOR ISD's guidance reflects the kind of locally adapted implementation that the Michigan Virtual and MDE partnership is designed to encourage statewide.
The MDE Comprehensive AI Guide for Districts provides the overarching state vision and structured administrative guidelines to help districts establish safe, equitable, and responsible AI practices. It includes a 52-week, phase-based implementation timeline and is specifically designed to integrate AI readiness into the Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process, ensuring AI becomes part of a district's long-term planning and evaluation cycles. The MDE guide defines what students should understand, centering core AI literacy concepts such as algorithms, data, and computational thinking, and sets clear standards for transparency and data privacy under the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule.
"MDE's AI guidance release marks an important turning point for K–12 education in Michigan and signals to the rest of the country that AI readiness must be approached with urgency, intentionality, and equity," said Jamey Fitzpatrick, president and CEO at Michigan Virtual. "We are proud to stand alongside MDE in this work and to offer districts a practical playbook with a helping hand to put these principles into action."
Michigan Virtual's AI Planning Guide and Integration Framework functions as the on-the-ground integration playbook, a practical district guide that operates beneath the MDE's broader state vision. It defines how schools can teach AI concepts and leverage AI for teaching and learning, offering discussion prompts for local planning as well as diagnostic resources, including an AI Risk Assessment and a "Common Pitfalls" guide for each domain.
Michigan Virtual's AI Planning Guide has served as a resource since August 2023, and its AI Lab, launched in October 2023, has since worked directly with more than 70 schools, districts, and intermediate school districts across Michigan to guide consistent and thoughtful AI integration.
