Serving with City Year Detroit
Mary Zoran enjoyed her time as an AmeriCorps member with City Year Detroit so much that she decided to serve another term with the organization. However, Mary was excited about service long before even knowing about AmeriCorps.
“Service always sounded interesting to me,” said Mary. “I never felt like I had a particular strength, but I knew that I cared about people and wanted to help in any way I could.”
Prior to City Year Detroit, Mary assisted in her high school’s theater guild, provided janitorial services at her church, and supported two social work learning and community groups during college.
In her previous role as a Student Success Coach, Mary regularly gave academic support in English Language Arts and History classrooms and acted as a peer-mentor for 9th grade students. Now, she has returned to AmeriCorps to serve as a Team Leader for City Year Detroit. In this position, she will be supporting new AmeriCorps members as Student Success Coaches in high schools.
Beyond this term with City Year, Mary plans to continue her career either at City Year or with another non-profit organization supporting education and local communities.
“Serving is important to me because it allows you to grow as an individual and a collective group,” said Mary.“It is a human-centered action and mindset that you can carry with you wherever you end up.”
