2020 Michigan's AmeriCorps Member Celebration
To kick-off a new year of AmeriCorps service, more than 600 Michigan's AmeriCorps members will come together virtually on November 18 to participate in the 2021 Member Celebration. These members are dedicating a year of their lives to providing intensive, results-driven service in communities across Michigan and came together to celebrate their courage and commitment.
AmeriCorps is a nation-wide, competitive grant program through which organizations can apply to host teams of individuals, called members, to provide service in nonprofits, public agencies, faith-based, and other community organizations. In the 2021-22 program year, more than 1,000 AmeriCorps members in Michigan will serve in a variety of capacities, including providing financial literacy training, helping homeless individuals and families find permanent housing, organizing literacy and tutoring programs for underperforming youth, mentoring and supporting youth from disadvantaged circumstances, preserving our environment, building houses, feeding the hungry, recruiting volunteers, and more. In return for providing a year service, members receive a modest living stipend and an education award to be used towards college, vocational training programs, or student loans. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) is the administering organization for Michigan's AmeriCorps programs, which it does with funds provided by the Corporation from National and Community Service (CNCS).
The Member Celebration helps members gain a new perspective on the impact their AmeriCorps service has throughout the state. During the event, members will participate in valuable training, networking, and teambuilding opportunities and enhance their professional development through workshops on leadership, volunteer recruitment, conflict resolution, and other topics relevant to national and community service. Additionally, members will hear from various keynote speakers, including Levantay Vanessa O'Connor, who is a professor, singer and author with over ten years' experience working for media powerhouses such as CBS, MTV, and BET. Levantay uses her voice as a platform for empowerment and personal development because she wants to live in a world where everyone is following their bliss and operating at full potential. The Celebration will conclude with the AmeriCorps Pledge and a swearing-in ceremony that will reaffirm members' commitment to AmeriCorps and national service.
